For the assignment of comparative analysis of a farmer s market and a grocery store in a low income community, it was a no-brainer where I would go. I didn t need to go online and find a list of farmer s markets in LA and narrow it down by the low income zip code, not when I lived in one. As a resident of a low income neighborhood, I knew exactly where to go: I would go to the Watt s Healthy Farmer s Market. Held every Saturday, whether it rains or shines, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Watt s Healthy Farmer Market is located in the Ted Watkins Memorial Park, appropriately named after Ted Watkins, the founder of the Watts Labor Community Action Committee (WLCAC). WLCAC is an influencing non-profit community based organization which serves to provide affordable housing, jobs, and social services to the residents of Watts and South Los Angeles, as well as fight poverty and ultimately, increasing the quality of life of the neighborhood. It was organized following the 1965 Watts riots with the support of several labor unions and funded by grants from the government at varies levels. The park was named in 1995 and is a 28-acre facility taking up one whole block with the farmer s market taking place in the southwest corner, conveniently located just a few steps away from one of the park s parking lots. Surrounding the park, are a few interesting things I d like to point out. There are quite a bit of stores, both big and small, as well as several residential homes.
